Express Care

Express Care or Emergency Care? How to Choose the Right Next Step

Understand the difference between a non-emergency express-care question and symptoms that need emergency evaluation right away.

Published July 14, 2026. This guide is general education and is not a substitute for a personal medical evaluation, diagnosis, or treatment plan.

Express care is for non-emergency concerns

Express care can be a practical option for certain non-emergency questions when a clinician can assess whether telehealth or an in-person visit is appropriate. It is not a substitute for emergency evaluation.

When in doubt, choose safety. If symptoms are severe, rapidly worsening, or concerning to you, seek urgent in-person help rather than waiting for an online visit.

Call 911 for emergency warning signs

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room for a medical emergency. Examples can include trouble breathing, chest pain or pressure, severe bleeding, loss of consciousness, new confusion, or another potentially life-threatening concern.

This is not a complete list. Emergency services are the right choice when a condition could become life-threatening or requires immediate equipment or care.

Before you book an express-care visit

Have the practical details ready so the practice can help direct you appropriately.

  • Your current symptoms and when they started
  • Current medications, allergies, and relevant recent care
  • Your physical location at the time of a telehealth visit
  • Whether symptoms are getting worse or include an emergency warning sign
